I Can Be Convinced I’m Wrong Sometimes

Filed under: Uncategorized — kenlie @ 11:16 pm

I’ve discussed this on my blog before, but since I’m in the mood for football I’ll discuss it again

Here’s my original post:

I was talking about college football with a friend today, and I think it’s a great idea to have a play-off. It could be similar to the college basketball format. For football there could be 16 teams (conference teams coming in automatically) and 5 at large bids. Sure, schools like North Texas will still get clobbered, but they’ll have the opportunity to do it in the play-offs.

It will still generate tons of revenue and it would be a fair way to determine the champion among all of the Division 1 teams.

"There is no reason for the NCAA not to sanction and sponsor the title like the do with other sports." (Peter, I agree with you on this.)

But we all know it’s a money issue. It will always be a money issue…The big boys don’t want to share the pie so no play-off is likely.

Good for all of you because the horns would win it all. ;)

After discussing it, I’m looking at this in the bigger picture.
More bowl games = more happy bowl winners.
It makes sense, doesn’t it?
And let us not forget the pressure on these players to win the big games. It already exists, and would just become much worse.
College athletes, in theory, are there to play AND get an education.  Most of us already roll our eyes at the latter. And creating a play-off system would thoroughly diminish the chances of those students leaving with a foundation to succeed outside of the sport.

There should be a  Cell Phone Ban in high schools.

I didn’t have a cell phone until I was a senior in high school. And at that time, I wasn’t allowed to use it unless I had an emergency. I don’t recall ever needing it, but I can think of situations in which it’s not a bad idea.

For instance, if the school has an open campus for lunch, and the student is in a wreck – they should have their cell to call for help. In this case, since the student has a car, the phone should be left in the glove box.

Most of us made it through school without this amenity. And cell phones will definitely segue into problems at school. Not only will they be a distraction for many students; they’re also valued at hundreds of dollars. Cell phones left in unattended backpacks, purses, etc. can be lost or stolen. And the likelihood of the latter has potential to cause more headaches for the parent than it’s worth. Not to mention, schools should not be liable for items like that.

Either way, school is a place to learn and socialize. Students can do both without the use of a cell phone.

The Supreme Court Has Gone Too Far

Filed under: Uncategorized — kenlie @ 11:17 pm

In the case of  Hudson v. Michigan, 04-1360, the Supreme Court backed the "no-knock" police raids which occur when police forcibly enter a private residence without first knocking and announcing that they’re the police.

I know I can thank my president for this, but this is asinine.

Because of this abhorrent ruling, we are losing our rights as American citizens.

I am appalled.

 Here’s the story.

This Is Funny

The reason I’m not crazy about Hannity and Colmes is that Sean is so much sharper than his counterpart, Alan.  I like the idea of the show, but Fox deserves the reputation it has for putting someone so inferior on with Sean Hannity.

I think he should be with someone who has a shot at being equal.  If ever that happens, I’ll be inclined to watch the show frequently.  For now, I only watch when there is something of particular interest.

Bringing This Topic To The Main Page

Filed under: Uncategorized — kenlie @ 11:20 pm

I have been hesitant to discuss this topic for a number of reasons. One of which is that it will be hard to discuss without an out pouring of emotions.

But I’ve read enough, and now I’m going to add my two cents.

Obi, you must be kidding. To say that the guy “has a guilty look on his face” is the reason you’ll never have to sit on a jury. And to refer to the adult female, as a “little girl” is also silly. She’s old enough to know what she’s doing.

That being said, here’s where I stand:

I don’t know what happened in the case of Mark Sanchez and this girl. What I do know is that though his name was cleared legally, it will be tarnished for a while. He’ll get over it, move on – people will forget. And I suppose the lesson he will learn now is people will always make judgments without facts. I’ve done it, and it’s been done to me.

Unfortunately, the law rarely protects everyone. And in the case of rape, I think it’s imperative to add as little burden as possible to the victim. Being raped has to be, by far, the shittiest feeling a person can ever have. And whether the victim wants the attention or not, rumors will be spread about her if she comes forward. And people will discuss it with little fact like we are here.

At 17, 18, 19 years old, girls expected to look out for themselves. Fair or not, we have to watch what we do. We have to be careful not to put ourselves in situations that could be potentially harmful. Some of us have had to learn that the hard way, and that’s just an unfair part of life.

The bottom line is – he is not guilty just because he’s an athlete at USC. The law allows me to believe he didn’t do it.

If he did do it, and if the girl is a victim – I hope she’ll learn not to put herself in a similar situation again. Some situations just can’t be helped, but from this story – this one could have been.

We will never know what really happened that night or who’s to blame.

But we do know that no should ALWAYS mean no. And if you’re going to party and get drunk – still try use some judgment.

The Sign Actually Said "Attention All Mexican Customers"

Filed under: Uncategorized — kenlie @ 11:20 pm

I went to the customer service desk at the closest store to my mom’s house, and here’s the sign I saw:

(Click the picture above to see a bigger view of the sign.)

I couldn’t believe it. And what is crazier than the sign itself, is that no one in the store realized how insulting the sign is. I asked permission to take the picture, and the person thought nothing of it.

The sign should say:

Attention all customers:

In order to cash a check, you must have a valid ID.

That’s simple enough, isn’t it? By singling out Mexicans, this sign indicates that a white or black person does not have to show ID when cashing a check over $1000.00.

The sign is unquestionably inappropriate, and further explains why Louisiana is viewed by the rest of the US in the way that it is.

I’m going to write a letter calling for a revision of the sign. I’ll post an update when I receive a response.

Internet Church

Filed under: Uncategorized — kenlie @ 11:21 pm

My old home church, Life Church (in Oklahoma City) is launching an internet campus today and tomorrow.  Apparently, we will be able to watch the entire service live.
The church already has several campuses so this is just one more way to reach the masses.
Check it out at: www.lifechurch.tv

***The Senior Pastor is Craig Groeschel, and Life Church is affiliated with the Evangelical Covenant Church.***
