It is apparent that I need to clarify a few things.
Number 1: I have no problem with African Americans. Nor do I have a problem with people who want to explore their heritage. It is part of all of us.
Number 2: Bill Cosby and Will Smith are at the top of my favorite actors list. I respect Colin Powell, Condi Rice and my 4th grade teacher,
Mrs. Fields…The list goes on and on…
Number 3: My birth certificate states that I am half American Indian. Therefore, I am a minority.
Number 4: I do not look down on people who are on welfare. I do, however, look down on lifetime welfare recipients or people who use food stamps, Medicaid, etc. while driving new cars and/or smoking cigarettes.
Number 5: The main event:
The problem I have with Black History Month is simple. Maybe I said it in a way that was outrageous so I’ll state my dislike again here.
It was/is important for every race in this country to be treated with equality. But equality is the key word. There was a time when black men and women couldn’t sit at the front of the bus. People like Rosa Parks should and have been commended on taking a stand against the bigots of the past. Martin Luther King also dreamed of equality among the races. George Washington Carver has undoubtedly influenced all of our lives. And I learned about the people in school.
It just seems to me, in my “narrow-mindedness” that these kinds of people would expect to be part of American History. Black History Month says to me “black people are not important enough to be part of America’s history so lets give them one month to appease them.” That is not my stance.
Equality means the same. African Americans should have the same rights as other Americans. But it doesn’t mean they’re rights should be extended to the detriment of white males.
No one needs to feel sorry for my friend, Gregory (A.K.A. G Esq.) He is a black male who “wants to be successful because of his own merit.” And he is working towards that end.
The African American race (and other races) deserves as much respect as Caucasians. It is superlatively regrettable that human beings ever thought differently. But it does not deserve more respect than other races.
The problem with the month is the double standard created by the month. There is no White History Month. All things being equal, there would be a month for white people, Hispanics, etc. Again, equality is key. Black History Month screams hypocrisy.
Groups, who may have started with sincere intentions, have become so extreme that they’ve lost the purpose of their missions.
I hope this sums up my dislike for the recognition of this month.
Cheney and his hunting accident are all over the news while I only saw a tiny blurb about Saddam. There’s only a paragraph or two about the fact that Saddam was discussing WMD’s in 1995.
It seems to me, liberals should be happy about Scalia’s statements to the Federalist Society.
I don’t get excited over the Olympics (with the new exception of Apollo.) And it’s good that I don’t because I’d be pissed that before I watched it, I’d know who wins.
A friend said today, “ the beauty of sports in the unpredictability of it all and seeing the drama unfold with the winners and losers…NBC refuses to show ANYTHING live, and ESPN is giving NBC a big “screw you” by showing results all the time…how about a little warning, a spoiler alert even…”
I don’t think this is too much to ask.
Why even predict a foot of snow? Knowing there are people in the viewing audience who have been wishing for some serious snow since November, it seems meteorologists would be realistic – to soften the blow when it snows an inch. A foot of snow would be stellar, but ‘m not buying it.
I’ve never celebrated White History Month. People like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Ray Nagin…can be as racist as they want to be. And that is categorically absurd.
Until July is White History Month or until there is White Entertainment Television, I don’t want to hear or see anything about black history month.
It’s total non-sesne.
Some white people have done cool things too.
Performances like today prove how hard it is to sing the national anthem.
If you know me, you know I sing the song how it was written, and I want to hear it sung how it was written.
Aaron Neville just did not have it in him. He couldn’t do it – not even close.
Aretha, on the other hand, can do anything. Imagine how it would sound if she belted out the song the way it’s supposed to be done.
Most people who sing it are just trying to sound like her when they do it anyway. I don’t have as much of a problem with her as I’ve had in the past with Faith Hill or Jessica Simpson, etc.
The song is not meant to show off. But if it was, I’d be much more impressed with someone did it right.
It was written out of respect for this great nation.
And I think it should be sung with that kind of respect.
