I’m Glad I’m Not The Judge, But…

How many times have you read stories of someone living a life of violence then reforming behind bars? It’s common isn’t it? But in California, it has been newsworthy recently.

Stanley “Tookie” Williams is on Death Row. He has been convicted of not one, but four murders. And he started one of the most notorious gangs in the nation.

I think it’s great that someone can turn away from violence and work for good, but that doesn’t mean he should receive clemency. He has already made his bed. He has already taken lives. All the good he does/has done won’t bring peace or life to those victims and their families.

I think it is swell that this gangster regrets founding the Crips. I even think it is peachy that he’s been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, but none of this is reason for clemency.

I am not a staunch proponent of the death penalty – not even close. But I understand why it works, and I don’t have a better option up my sleeve. So in this case, it seems he should have to face the same punishment as others in his place. He is on Death Row because he was convicted of murder. Do you think it makes the victims’ families feel safe or forgiving that this guy writes children’s’ books? I doubt it.
